Composed of a water-soluble ionic moiety and a long (hydrophobic) carbon chain, detergents are amphipathic surface acting cleansing agents effective at solubilizing hydrophobic molecules. With widespread applications in biochemistry, biological detergents for instance are used to solubilize the bipolar lipid membrane of cells to release membrane-bound proteins.
